TradingView Basics

1. Getting Started

  • Go to TradingView and choose your desired market section:

    • Crypto, Stocks, Forex, etc.

  • To view the full historical price action, switch to logarithmic scale:

    • Found in the bottom right corner.

    • Investors typically use this setting for better long-term visualization.

  • To enable Dark Mode:

    • Click your profile icon (top left corner) → choose Dark Theme if preferred.

  1. Chart Appearance & Customization
  • Click the Settings icon (top right) → go to the Canvas tab.

    • Experiment with different styles until you find one you like.

    • Oskar prefers keeping it clean and simple.

  • Chart Style (top left):

    • You can change the chart type, but the standard and preferred style is Candlesticks. (The basic way, you do not have to change anything here)

  • Timeframe (next to style selector):

    • Example: If you choose the Weekly timeframe, each candlestick represents one week. Use different time zones for the time frames.

  1. Understanding Candlesticks
  • Hover your mouse over a candle — the opening and closing prices appear in the top left corner.

  • Red candle: (green is the opposite)

    • The top of the body = opening price.

    • The bottom = closing price.

  • Wicks (thin lines) show how far the price moved up or down during the time period but then returned to the closing price.

  1. Drawing Tools
  • To draw a line:

    • Click once to start, then click again to set the end point.

  • Move slightly left in the toolbar to access more tools:

    • Horizontal lines, trend lines, percentage measurements, and other options.

  • To delete everything:

    • Right-click on the chart → choose Delete All.

  1. Comparing Assets
  • Example: $ETH/BTC

    • Shows how many BTC you can get for 1 ETH.

    • If the chart trends up, ETH is outperforming BTC (ETH is stronger).

    • If it trends down, BTC is performing better.

  1. Practice Task (from session)

Task:

  1. Find a crypto chart (e.g., $ETHUSDT).

  2. Go to March 31.

  3. Use the Long Position tool, switch it to percent mode, and check how much your coin has moved.

  4. Do this for 3 different coins.

  5. Then repeat the same process with the /BTC pair (e.g., ETHBTC instead of ETHUSDT).

  1. Creating Custom Ratios
  • If a specific pair doesn’t exist, you can create your own.

    • Example: If $BNKR/BTC doesn’t exist:

      1. Open $BNKRUSDT.

      2. In the search bar, add /BTC.

      3. TradingView will divide $BNKR by $BTC to create $BNKR/BTC.

  • This works with any combination (even $BTC/SPX or other custom formulas).

  • In the search bar, you can use basic math operations like division /, multiplication *, etc.

  1. Q&A — Additional Tips
  • To view two charts at once:

    • Click the “+” icon (top left corner) → choose New Price Scale → you’ll now see two scales/charts side by side.
